Go Green! Tips & Tricks

Recycle, recycle, recycle.  You may not even be aware of how many items are actually recyclable these days.  Check with your local waste management facility to see what your community can recycle.

Use cucumber has an ant repellent.  There’s a compound in cucumbers called “trans-2-nonenal” that will repel ants and cockroaches.

If you have azalea bushes, instead of throwing out your coffee grounds after your morning brew, mix them with the soil at the base of your bushes to help your azaleas bloom beautifully.  Azaleas love the acidic soil and will respond positively to this treat.

Prefer tea to coffee? Then you’ve probably thrown away your fair share of used tea bags. Why not invest in a tea ball and buy loose tea leaves to cut down on the waste? If you’re set on tea bags, you can eliminate the amount of waste by reusing the same bag 2 or 3 times before throwing it away.

Got spoiled fruits and veggies?  Instead of filling a landfill with your waste, why not use it to make a nice fertile soil.  You can fill a bin in your kitchen and transport it to a compost pile in your backyard.  Add leaves, sticks, and grass clippings from your yard maintenance.

When grocery shopping, check out your store to see if you can reuse your existing container to buy items from bulk bins.  Also, reusable cloth bags to transport your groceries home will help eliminate the need to discard superfluous plastic and paper bags that pile up after several market trips.
